HEALTH AND SAFETY TIPS TO BE AWARE OF WHEN WELDING STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless steel is one of the most popular metals used in the construction industry because of its strength and versatility. It comes in many different sizes and lengths which is why it’s common for workers to have to weld pieces together during a project.

The welding process gives off fumes which can be dangerous both for workers and for anyone else on the site. While we’re proud to offer a wide range of steel fabrication services we’re highly aware of the need for safety.

As a result, we’ve put together some hints and tips for staying safe when you’re welding stainless steel. But first of all, let’s look at why welding is potentially dangerous.

Workplace stress can include long work hours, heavy workloads, conflict with coworkers, and/or improper or dangerous working conditions. These types of issues can lead to distraction or rushing. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is best to talk to your manager.

Workers need to be aware of zinc oxide fumes when working with galvanized stainless steel. If they were to breathe in these fumes it could cause symptoms that are similar to flu, such as dizziness, nausea, fever, lethargy, etc.

However, when working with paint-coated stainless steel, it’s important to know that the resulting fumes also contain lead oxide. This can cause damage to the central nervous system, kidneys, and reproductive system as well as lead poisoning.

Improper use of tools and machines can mean a number of different things including using the wrong tool for a task, not knowing how to properly use a machine, or using heavy machinery and tools without the proper training.

Before you use any type of machine or tool at work, make sure that you have received the proper procedure and safety training. If you don’t know how to use something or are not comfortable, don’t use it!

Stainless steel pans MUST be preheated before you add any food to the pans. I usually turn my stovetop on medium-low heat and allow it to heat for 2-3 minutes. You should be able to still touch the rim of the pan safely, but it should be hot (see video below). Add your oil to the pan after it is preheated.

While the initial exposure to welding fumes causes mild to moderate effects, in the longer term the effects can be devastating. As well as damaging vital organs, welders can also develop a variety of cancers due to exposure to UV radiation and welding fumes.

Knowing all the hazards in your workplace is important to staying safe. You need to be on the lookout for any potentially dangerous situations or moving machinery. Even if the area seems clear, you need to constantly scan as hazards can occur at any time.

Always wear protective clothing which should be made from non-flammable materials and cover every part of your body. You should also wear a full-face welding helmet that is fitted with a UV filtered lens as well as steel-capped boots and flame-resistant gloves.

Safety Tips To Follow When Handling Sheet Metal

All the professionals involved in each operation must be properly qualified for the task and know all the information regarding the project: weights, cargo, transportation, etc. This is the only way to plan all the work with all guarantees.

Feeling safe is an important aspect of life. A safe house, a safe job, etc., are things everyone desires. To that end, society has developed procedures for almost everything we do, especially in the field of workplace safety.

Obviously, some work environments are more dangerous than others. In these situations, “safety first” is more than just a saying. With that in mind, below are the top safety guidelines for employees working in hazardous environments.

Beginners might want to wear gloves for protection, but you can get a better feel for metalcraft without them, so as soon as you’re familiar with the tools and materials you’ll probably want to work bare-handed. Start your child out with gloves and when she appears to be ready, let her try working without them.

All workers should wear the required safety gear while on the premises. The equipment must also be kept clean and maintained. Wearing loose clothing or jewelry while on the job should be avoided. In addition, people with long hair must keep it tied back when working with moving machinery.

Metal bending is a process, which with the help of plastic deformation, changes the shape of sheet metals and tubes. What is plastic deformation? It is a process in which a material undergoes certain irreversible changes because of the forces applied to it.

So, frequent inspections of metal bending equipment are a necessity for Marlin’s employees. Mechanical engineers routinely inspect metal bending machines before their activation and during the initial startup.

Carefully recording any issues and recording them in a repair log. This helps to keep Marlin’s press brakes and other equipment in tip-top shape so it can be safely used at maximum capacity.

To protect yourself and those around you, always be aware of what could go wrong and what you can do to prevent a potentially dangerous situation. Never take unnecessary risks and stay calm if you find yourself in a perilous predicament.

One of the biggest dangers of working with sheet metal is the potential for cuts and lacerations. Finished pieces of sheet metal are typically smoothed out on the sides to reduce the chance of cuts.

When a piece of sheet metal is still being fabricated in the factory, however, the edges may be sharp. Running your bare hand or fingers across the edge of a piece of sheet metal can easily cut into your flesh, creating an open laceration.

Whenever possible, use a well-mounted vice to grip your piece while you’re working on it. This may not always be practical, but consider it whenever you can. Use a rag or piece of scrap leather to cushion the metal and keep from marring it.

This is one of the most necessary steps before starting any project. Your tools and materials should be meticulously checked for malfunctioning in order to ensure that they are in good working condition. Steel and metal fabrication utilizes many hand-operated tools such as shears with sharp edges that could easily cut through skin and tissue.

Safety training is essential when working in a plant. Employees must be aware of all safety procedures, especially as they pertain to their specific position. Special training should occur periodically to reduce the risks of accidents.

Have you operated the sheet bending machine before? If not, then you should first get used to it. You should understand the machine, and its operation, before you actually start using it. Get familiar with the functioning of the machine. For this, you can refer to the instruction manual.
