HEALTH AND SAFETY TIPS TO BE AWARE OF WHEN WELDING STAINLESS STEEL

Stainless steel is one of the most popular metals used in the construction industry because of its strength and versatility. It comes in many different sizes and lengths which is why it’s common for workers to have to weld pieces together during a project.

The welding process gives off fumes which can be dangerous both for workers and for anyone else on the site. While we’re proud to offer a wide range of steel fabrication services we’re highly aware of the need for safety.

As a result, we’ve put together some hints and tips for staying safe when you’re welding stainless steel. But first of all, let’s look at why welding is potentially dangerous.

Workplace stress can include long work hours, heavy workloads, conflict with coworkers, and/or improper or dangerous working conditions. These types of issues can lead to distraction or rushing. If you are experiencing any of these issues, it is best to talk to your manager.

Workers need to be aware of zinc oxide fumes when working with galvanized stainless steel. If they were to breathe in these fumes it could cause symptoms that are similar to flu, such as dizziness, nausea, fever, lethargy, etc.

However, when working with paint-coated stainless steel, it’s important to know that the resulting fumes also contain lead oxide. This can cause damage to the central nervous system, kidneys, and reproductive system as well as lead poisoning.

Improper use of tools and machines can mean a number of different things including using the wrong tool for a task, not knowing how to properly use a machine, or using heavy machinery and tools without the proper training.

Before you use any type of machine or tool at work, make sure that you have received the proper procedure and safety training. If you don’t know how to use something or are not comfortable, don’t use it!

Stainless steel pans MUST be preheated before you add any food to the pans. I usually turn my stovetop on medium-low heat and allow it to heat for 2-3 minutes. You should be able to still touch the rim of the pan safely, but it should be hot (see video below). Add your oil to the pan after it is preheated.

While the initial exposure to welding fumes causes mild to moderate effects, in the longer term the effects can be devastating. As well as damaging vital organs, welders can also develop a variety of cancers due to exposure to UV radiation and welding fumes.

Knowing all the hazards in your workplace is important to staying safe. You need to be on the lookout for any potentially dangerous situations or moving machinery. Even if the area seems clear, you need to constantly scan as hazards can occur at any time.

Always wear protective clothing which should be made from non-flammable materials and cover every part of your body. You should also wear a full-face welding helmet that is fitted with a UV filtered lens as well as steel-capped boots and flame-resistant gloves.
